Yard Sign Size Guide: Common Dimensions and Where to Use Each Size

For most yard signs, 18 x 24 inches is the size people expect. Go up to 24 x 36 inches when the sign has to be read from a passing car or across a parking lot. Smaller signs suit walkways and directions; bigger signs suit roads. This guide covers the common sizes, how to pick one, and how a coroplast yard sign is made and mounted.

Common Yard Sign Sizes and Dimensions

These are the sizes you will see most often. They are general industry sizes, not limits: our coroplast signs are cut to whatever size you enter, from 6 x 6 inches up to 48 x 96 inches.

Size (inches) Size (cm) Typical use
12 x 18 in 30.5 x 45.7 cm Walkway, directional and small event signs
18 x 24 in 45.7 x 61 cm The everyday yard sign: real estate, political, business and event signs
24 x 36 in 61 x 91.4 cm Roadside signs that drivers need to read
48 x 96 in 122 x 244 cm Full-sheet signs for site entrances and large events

The cm figures are the inches multiplied by 2.54. Either orientation works; 24 x 18 (landscape) suits a name and a phone number, while 18 x 24 (portrait) suits a logo above a short message.

How to Choose a Yard Sign Size

Ask three questions:

  1. How far away is the reader? Someone on the sidewalk is a few feet away. A driver may only see the sign for a few seconds from across the road.
  2. How much do you need to say? A name and an arrow fit on a small sign. A name, offer, phone number and website need more room, or fewer words.
  3. Where will it stand? A lawn, a fence, a booth upright or a parking lot each limit what size is practical to carry and fix.

If you are between two sizes and the sign faces a road, go bigger.

What Yard Sign Size Is Easiest to Read from the Road?

Size matters less than letter height and how much text there is. A commonly quoted rule of thumb in signage is about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of reading distance. Treat it as a starting point, not a measurement: contrast, font and the number of words matter as much.

For road-facing signs:

  • Use 24 x 36 inches or larger.
  • Keep it to one message and one contact method.
  • Use dark text on a light background, or the reverse, with strong contrast.
  • Leave space around the text rather than filling every inch.

Real Estate and Political Yard Sign Sizes

Real estate and political signs are usually 18 x 24 inches or 24 x 18 inches, mounted on a wire stake in a lawn. Some campaigns and agents step up to 24 x 36 inches for corner lots or busy roads. Check any local rules on sign size and placement before you order, because they vary by city and by property.

Are Coroplast Signs Suitable for Yard Signs?

Yes. Coroplast is the corrugated plastic most yard signs are made from. Ours is 4mm corrugated plastic, printed direct with UV ink in a matte finish, so there is no laminated layer to lift at the edges.

  • Single or double sided. Single sided (4/0) prints one face. Double sided (4/4) prints both, so the sign reads from both directions along a street.
  • Flute direction. The flutes run vertically as standard, which is the direction that lets the sign sit on an H-stake. Signs wider than 48 inches run horizontal flutes instead, so keep a staked sign 48 inches wide or less.
  • Outdoors. It can be used outdoors. We do not publish a rated outdoor lifespan for this material, so treat it as event and short-run signage rather than permanent exterior signage.

How to Mount a Yard Sign

Two optional finishing choices are available, and neither is included unless you add it:

  • 10 x 30 inch steel H-stake. Pushes into the ground and holds the sign upright on a lawn or verge.
  • No. 2 brass grommets. For tying or hanging the sign on a fence, rail or booth frame.

For softer, roll-up signage on fences and walls, a vinyl or fabric banner can be a better fit, and feather flags add height where a yard sign sits too low to be seen.

Preparing Yard Sign Artwork

Coroplast signs follow our large-format artwork guidelines:

  • One single-page JPEG or PDF per face, in CMYK, at 150 dpi or higher for raster artwork.
  • Built to the ordered size, with no crop marks and no bleed.
  • A double sided sign needs two separate files, one for each face.
  • Maximum upload is 300MB.

Yard Signs at Trade Shows and Events

The same coroplast sign works inside the venue as well as outside: directional signs pointing to a demo station, aisle markers, sponsor boards, and parking or check-in signs on H-stakes. Add them to your trade show booth checklist so they are printed with the rest of the booth.
