Front & Back-Lit Channel Letters

Illustration of front and back-lit channel letters at night, with glowing faces and a warm halo on the wall

Front and back-lit channel letters — sometimes called combination-lit or dual-lit — light the acrylic face like a front-lit letter and throw a halo onto the wall like a back-lit one. Each letter is built with a translucent face, aluminum returns and a clear back, then mounted on standoffs so the rear light has room to spread. The result is the brightest, most dimensional channel letter there is: the lettering glows and also appears to float off the building. It is the one to choose when a sign has to compete with a busy street at night.

Frequently asked questions

How is a front and back-lit letter different from front-lit?

A front-lit letter only lights its face. A front and back-lit letter also has a clear back and stands off the wall, so it lights the face and throws a halo onto the surface behind it. You get the readability of a lit face plus the depth of a halo.

Can the face and the halo be different colours?

Often, yes — for example a red face with a white halo. Ask for it when you request a quote and the proof will show both colours; some combinations need separate LED runs, which is reflected in the quote.

When is this worth choosing over front-lit?

When the sign sits among other lit signs, on a dark facade, or anywhere the business needs to stand out at night. If daytime visibility matters most, or a landlord limits illumination, front-lit or halo-lit alone is usually enough.

What do you need from me to quote channel letters?

Your logo or lettering as a vector file (AI, EPS or PDF), the wording, the letter height or the overall width you have to fill, and a photo of the wall or fascia with its measurements. If a landlord has sign criteria for the building, send those too — they often fix the height, colours and mounting style.

Do channel letters need a permit?

Exterior signs usually do, and the rules are set by your city and often by your landlord as well. Check both before ordering. Your quote comes with a dimensioned proof, which is the drawing most permit offices and landlords ask to see.

Is installation included?

No. Letters are built and shipped ready to mount; installation is done on site by your sign installer, and illuminated letters must be connected to power by a licensed electrician.

How fast is production and shipping?

Fabrication and delivery timing are confirmed with your quote. We ship across the United States and Canada — see our Shipping page for delivery details.

What artwork file formats do you accept?

JPEG or PDF (single page only), up to 300MB. CMYK — convert Pantone and spot colours before sending. 150dpi for raster images, which is ample for large format. Build artwork to the ordered size; scaled artwork is detected and fitted, and do not include bleed or crop marks. Convert live fonts to outlines. We check every file at no charge and send a free proof before printing.

Do you offer bulk or wholesale discounts on front & back-lit channel letters?

Yes. Pricing is wholesale and the per-piece price falls as the quantity rises. Send your quantity with your quote request and the volume price is included in the quote.
